Renewable Roofing?

Postby sunny » Mon Mar 09, 2009 9:59 pm

I'm surprised I haven't seen more publications on the positive environmental impact of renewable roof systems. For one, foam roofing is renewable because it lasts the life of the building as long as the coating layer at the surface is maintained. The coating layer is basically a heavy-duty and thick elastomeric acrylic-based paint. However, it isn't normally referred to as paint because it cures much thicker than paint (i.e. 20 mills per layer). The spray polyurethane foam layer is a thick waterproofing barrier that lies beneath the protective coating. This spray foam waterproofing layer is usually about 1.5" thick. The material is estimated to last as long as the property as long as it is protected from UV rays. Foam roofs installed as early as the 60's continue to provide waterproofing, insulation, and Cool Roof savings for their properties. Some roof installation companies report to only require one added layer of coating per 20 years (see Foam Roofing is Renewable Roofing). Renewable roof systems keep our landfills from filling up with torn-off roof material. If you are aware of any roof systems beside foam roofing that are renewable please comment on it!

I agree--foam roofing is renewable and there are not many articles out there on the subject. How is foam roofing renewable? The base foam roof never needs to be replaced--ever, as long as the installation is done right. How is it renewable? You just add a layer of coating every so many years; as the UV rays of the sun eventually penetrate the coating, a new layer is added in subsequent years. After the initial investment in a foam roof, you'll only need to pay for recoats, as long as you don't allow the roof to degrade (that means regular inspections, at least once or twice a year).

In order to do a recoat, the roof must be cleaned, and inspected. After repairs are done (if any), a new layer of coating is added. After a recoat, a roof may last 15-25 years before another recoat is required, depending on the type of coating used and the thickness.

There are certainly many advantages of foam roofing as I have seen in my area displace enough carbon in energy savings to take over 1200 passenger vehicles off of the road every year! During the energy crisis the foam roofing proved to be best green impact for renewable energy. There are many companies who are providing services nowdays for installating the foam roof as well as they give all the technical deatils and benefits of it. But sometimes it is quite costlier. But I would suggest it is always better to install a long-lasting, inert, and energy-efficient Dura-Foam Roof for Preserving your natural environment.Just follow the link below and you will get the answer of all your questions. With best wishes.
